About the artwork
The oil painting is a classical tondo. The tondo is a square painting with a circular image painted inside. Thus, the square forms a frame image that encloses the inner image of the circle. The circular inner picture shows an egg from which two birds look out into the outer world. The peculiarity of this world is that the bird on the right sees a summer landscape by day and the bird on the left sees a dark landscape by night with destroyed trees. The birds obviously want to leave the protected space represented by the egg, but both birds hesitate. The rest of the square outer painting shows a dark landscape in each corner with another small egg, each with a bird peering out through a hole in the egg shell. The painting has an individually made model frame and is titled, dated and signed on the back.
