About the artwork
The oil painting is a classical tondo. The tondo is a square painting into which a circular image is painted. Thus the square forms a frame picture which encloses the inner picture of the circle. The circular inner picture shows a large rock with windows. One thinks at first of caves and at second of people. However, there are no people and no signs of civilisation to be seen. There are also no plants or other living creatures in the painting. The remaining square exterior painting shows a barren rocky landscape with large and small rocks. Here, too, there is not a soul, animal or plant to be seen. The landscape looks as if it has been plundered. The painting has a single model frame and is titled, dated and signed on the reverse.
